Animal Mythology

While learning about the wild world and my place in it, the scientific knowledge of my culture was not sufficient for my needs. So I looked to older, spiritual wisdom from first cultures. The myths of indigenous people are teaching me about the love that binds all things. The amount of knowledge lost due to conquest and colonialism is astounding and heart breaking. The land specific knowledge has been very helpful in my healing process, and through sharing what these stories mean to me I hope to keep this useful information available for others.

FOREST FOR THE TREES

Embark on a journey of artistic exploration with our Doug Fir tree series – a collection born from a 100-day creative endeavor. Each painting is a unique expression of the Doug Fir tree growing in my backyard, a testament to my dedication to pushing creative boundaries. Unveil the diverse interpretations and discover the evolution of my artistic license throughout this transformative project.

Desert

The extremes bring out a response because survival compels you. The minerals, flora and fauna of the desert are striking. These images capture the beauty of static states and fleeting blooms.

Miniatures

Working small can look so big. I use a pallet knife, oil paints and 8x8" canvas or wood boards to capture the warmth and fluidity of our surroundings in this ongoing series of original landscapes.

Progression of the north american diet

“The progression of the North American diet” is a series of modern art portraits of different foods, from different times in Monterey County. Some are natural and look as they do when humans find them. Some are natural, and have the appearance of being produced. Some are creations of the human imagination, using natural and artificial ingredients. While keeping each piece unique and beautiful, I want people to be able to look at the whole show as a story of how our interaction with the edible world has changed over time.

Portraits

Faces are endlessly interesting from the perspective of shadow and light. I use a mix of imaginative realism and historical settings to connect the viewer to a depth of feeling. I really enjoy creating portraits for people and their two and four legged family members. Here are a few examples of my portrait work. Send me an email to jack@jackwrayartist.com to discuss a commission.

misfits

Some images just have to be painted, this is their home.
