A mother horse walks across the high plains of the Warm Springs Reservation with it’s foals running close behind, and the father in the background. The East face of Mt. Hood can be seen in the distance.
This piece started as a request for a painting of an Appaloosa horse. But me being ignorant of horses, and armed only with the advice that they roam wild in the Warm Springs Reservation, I ended up using a photograph of a Paint instead. When this was pointed out to me by a horse expert I was disappointed in myself for making a mistake, but also happy at the coincidence that I had painted a Paint!
With the year of the Fire Horse approaching I added flames at the base of each hoof. These horses are helping in the renewal of the land by spreading fire across the plains. Fires consume dead and decaying matter, returning nutrients to the soil, which promotes new plant growth. They are also symbolically helping you the viewer by sharing the healing power of beauty while showing their love, strength, family, and community.
